Do you think that the sovereign debt crisis in Europe has proved you right because you have been saying that none of this should be done and banks should simply have been allowed to fail?

Q:

I sometimes get it right and even I get it right sometimes. Banks should have been allowed to fail and its country should be allowed to fail. If I were a German citizen, I would be outraged that I might have to start paying for Greek politicians who went and spend huge amounts of money. There are more countries set to payout not just in Europe but around the world.

Of course. How can they maintain the credit rating other than fixing the books, or something. The UK has staggering amounts of debt that it has taken on in the past few years.

The recent strength in the dollar is it here to stay?

It’s here to stay for a while because of the serious problems in Europe many people were using the dollars carry trade and now reversing and borrowing at low interest rates and investing elsewhere and now having to take that money back and we burst the carry trade and that makes the dollar go higher for a while. I own the dollar for that reason and I own the Japanese yen for that reason. Both could be temporary beneficiaries of what is happening in Europe.

It’s happening. Don’t you read, don’t you watch the TV, don’t you see what is happening in Europe? I mean, we are having at least the semi-crisis and I think that we are going to have more and more currency turmoil over 2010 and 2011. It’s happening. I am glad you brought it up.

As an investor, would you say that the biggest risk in India today is inflation?

No. The more serious risk in India is the huge water problem that northern India has. If they do not do something about the water problem, then there would not be an India story at all but inflation is certainly one of the problems that India is facing.

I am happy that they are getting seriously worried about it after 50 years or 60 years or whatever it has been, but India should be one of the most productive agriculture nations in the world. You have got the land, you have got the soil, you have got the weather, everything is right for India and yet, there are so many regulations and it is almost impossible for Indian farmers to produce much less to compete with the rest of the world. Thousands of Indian farmers commit suicide every year because they cannot make a living and yet in India you should be putting America to shame with your agriculture production instead of sitting and importing food.
